100 years of celebrating Black history
2026 marked the 100th annual commemoration, a tradition Carter G. Woodson started in 1926.
In 1926, historian Carter G. Woodson created Negro History Week. He chose February because it holds the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.
Fifty years later, in 1976, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History expanded the week into Black History Month. The 2026 theme, "A Century of Black History Commemorations," marked the 100th annual celebration.
